This plain weave polyester is made from Fire-Retardant threads that will last the life of the fabric, whereas the fire-retardancy of treated, non-inherent FR fabrics, dissipate over time when washed. Lightweight, soft and uncoated, it is suitable for paper sublimation printing and just the ticket for winning lampshades and cushions. Polyester yarns are inherently FR to BS5867. Please note textiles widths will vary +/- 2% from batch to batch due to variances in finishing/processing.What does "Inherent" flame retardant mean? "Inherent" means that the flame-retardant properties are a fundamental part of the chemical structure of the fiber itself (such as Modacrylic or Trevira CS). Unlike "treated" fabrics, where a chemical coating is applied to the surface, inherent FR properties can never be washed out, worn away, or dry-cleaned out. The safety is permanent for the life of the fabric. How does Inherent FR compare to "FR Treated" (Proban/Pyrovatex) fabrics? Inherent FR: Permanent protection. The fabric is often softer, more breathable, and has a better "hand-feel." It is generally more expensive but offers a better long-term return on investment.FR Treated: Usually a topical chemical application on natural fibers like cotton. The protection can diminish over time with heavy laundering or abrasion. Is this fabric "Crib 5" compliant? For commercial use in the UK (hotels, nursing homes, etc.), fabrics often must pass the BS 5852 Source 5 (Crib 5) test. While many of our plain inherent FR fabrics pass this test independently, for upholstery use, they are often paired with an FR-compliant foam or interliner to ensure the entire piece of furniture meets the legal requirement.
