A plush, matt velvet that is inherently Fire-Retardant (FR). Ideal for stylish home upholstery and other soft furnishings, This textile is made from Fire-Retardant threads that will last the life of the fabric, whereas the Fire-Retardancy of treated, non-Inherent FR fabrics dissipate over time when washed. Made from 100% polyester, it is uncoated for paper sublimation printing. Polyester yarns are inherently FR to BS5867. Please note textiles widths will vary +/- 2% from batch to batch due to variances in finishing/processing.What makes this velvet "Inherent" FR? "Inherent" means the fire-retardant properties are built into the molecular structure of the fibers (typically high-grade FR polyester). Unlike "treated" velvets, where a chemical spray is applied to the surface, the safety of Inherent FR velvet can never be washed out or worn away. It remains permanently fire-rated for the life of the fabric. How does it differ from traditional cotton velvet? While cotton velvet is beautiful, it is naturally highly flammable and prone to crushing. Our Inherent FR velvet offers several advantages:
Permanent Safety: No need for re-treatment after cleaning.
Durability: Synthetic FR fibers are much more resistant to "bruising" (permanent marks in the pile).
Moisture Resistance: It does not absorb humidity like cotton, preventing the fabric from becoming heavy or sagging in public spaces. Is this velvet "Crib 5" compliant for commercial use? Yes. For use in UK hotels, pubs, and nursing homes, upholstery must pass the BS 5852 Source 5 (Crib 5) test. Our inherent FR velvet is engineered to meet these strict standards. When used for drapery, it also meets BS 5867 Part 2 Type B & C, the standard for theatre and stage curtains.
